MOVE - Movement Opportunities for a Visionary Education

Mission: MOVE will challenge, enrich, and educate K-12 students through a conceptual movement based curriculum. Using dance as an educational tool and as a foundation for personal exploration, students will master movement concepts as they relate to core curriculum.

MOVE shares in the beliefs of the National Dance Association, which cites:

  • Dance is basic to education, intensifying and clarifying the human experience.
  • Dance reinforces all learning, relating to and enhancing other academic areas.
  • Dance provides an alternative to the usual modes of education and is valuable in reaching students who may not respond to more formal modes of teaching.
  • Dance promotes self and social awareness, helping students confront and understand themselves and cooperate effectively with others.
  • Dance promotes good health and a positive body image.
  • Dance promotes fuller understanding of one’s own culture and that of other peoples.

Whether students are studying a science unit on cirrus and cumulus clouds, a social studies unit
on Native American culture, or a language arts unit on re-telling a story, MOVE will create a structured
dance curriculum tailored toward your academic curriculum. MOVE offers residencies and workshops for
K-12 students. Residencies consist of curriculum development and planning sessions between teaching
artist and grade level teachers, weekly classes culminating in an informal performance, and a
reflection/assessment period.

Benefits of bringing MOVE to your school:

  • Students will be challenged on a physical and creative level, as well as an academic level.
  • Students will develop and apply dance skills, affective skills, cognitive skills, and social skills
that are essential to human development.
  • Students will learn to understand dance as a natural language and as a performing art.
  • Student interest and appreciation in the arts will help strengthen our schools. Strengthening our
school districts will in turn strengthen our communities.
